Founded by Torakusa Yamaha, they have been making bikes since 1955, when they produced the 'Red Dragonfly', a 2-stroke single. It was a most successful 125cc street bike and paved the way for the YD-1, a 250cc twin which first saw light in 1957. 1968 saw the production of what was possibly the first dual-purpose bike, the DT-1 Enduro. Not until 1970 did Yamaha bring out their first 4-stroke, the Yamaha XS-1.
