Founded in 1909 by Giuseppe Gilera, their first machine was a 317cc engine with overhead valves which was driven by a belt. In 1935 Gilera purchased the rights to the 4-cylinder Rondine, which, for almost 40 years was the engine at the heart of racing motorcycles. From the 1930s Gilera manufactured 4-strokes ranging from 100-500cc, of which the Saturno (1939)was the most famous. Following the War, Grand Prix Motorcycle racing was dominated by Gilera motorbikes. Over an eight year period, the road racing championship (500cc) was won by a Gilera motorcycle six times. Piaggio bought the firm in 1969.
